Product Description
At the age of eighteen, in that first golden Oxford summer, Milly was up for anything. Rupert and his American lover, Allan, were an important part of her new, exciting life, so when Rupert suggested to her that she and Allan should get married to keep Allan in the country, Milly didn’t hesitate.

Ten years later, Milly is a very different person and engaged to Simon—who is wealthy, serious, and believes her to be perfect. Milly’s secret history is locked away so securely she has almost persuaded herself that it doesn’t exist—until, only four days before her elaborate wedding. To have and to hold takes on a whole new meaning when one bride’s past catches up with her and bring the present crashing down.

With her trademark style of keen insight, and razor sharp wit, Madeleine Wickham introduces her fanatical fan-base, plus a host of new readers to a fresh and irresistible heroine in The Wedding Girl.

5 out of 5 stars More thoughtful - I feel like I'm growing up with her   February 14, 2010
Heather A. Buettner (Los Angeles)
I bought the first Shopaholic book when it came out in the UK as The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic and thought it was hilarious. I've been following Sophie/Madeline ever since, and feel like her topics are growing up at just about the same pace I am. I can see why some people who are expecting more of the Shopaholic fun to be disappointed by this, but that's why she writes with two names - these Madeline Wickham books are always more thoughtful and slightly darker.

Anyway, I loved it. I loved the twists and turns, I loved the characters, and I loved all the different perspectives she writes from. It's still a fun book, don't get me wrong. It's not all serious. Just deals with more real issues than the Shopaholic books. The story and characters have more depth.

Still, I read it on a flight and it was a wonderful way to pass four hours. I really hope Madeline Wickham sticks around for a long time!

5 out of 5 stars Bravo Madeline!   February 2, 2010

Although the entire pretext of this story, Milly's impulsive marriage, is rather silly, somehow the whole story ends up working beautifully. Whether writing in her pen or real name, Wickham has an amazing ability to create characters who you care about despite the fact that they are often foolish, immature, dizzy, flighty et al. Milly is pretty much all of those, but she ends up being likeable because of the writing.

The Isobel and Harry sub-plot was far more preposterous, and could have been omitted without any harm to the storyline.

But all in all, I really loved this story!

5 out of 5 stars fun wickham outing   January 29, 2010
audrey (white mtns)
I started to give this latest Wickham social comedy 4 stars. It didn't make me cry. It didn't make me laugh out loud. And I probably won't ever wonder about "what that character would be up to now" the way I do with a couple of Madeline Wickham's (aka Sophie Kinsella) other creations. It was a four star in the realm of Wickham's scintillating universe of outrageous characters and situations, but it was a five star in the realm of books in general, if what you are looking for is delightful fluff that rings true -- the best escapism possible.

We meet Milly as a romantic and adventurous 18-year old who commits an impetuous act of friendship that will change her life; quickly the story brings us to contemporary times, as 28-year old Milly is preparing for her media-worthy marriage to Simon, a rich young man full of daddy issues. I guess part of the reason I didn't *love* this book is because I never really sympathized much with our protagonist; nor did I much care for Simon who, by the end, I wasn't sure I *wanted* Milly to hook. Wickham/Kinsella is always fun, but here I'd say she is missing the depth of insight that usually sets her above most writers. As usual the author excels at drawing meaningful character profiles quickly, and then placing them rapidly into the worst couple of weeks of their lives -- one hopes!

Fun read, but not the author's best.

2 out of 5 stars Not Madeleine Wickman (AKA Sophie's) best book   November 30, 2009

To be honest this book does not come close to Sophie's previous books. It's lacks the witt and charm that her Shopaholic Series produced. I struggled to get into the characters and really found it drab.

3 out of 5 stars Plot is far fetched at times, but writing draws you in   November 26, 2009
Boston Book Addict (Boston, Mass.)
A have read almost if not all of the books that Madeleine Wickham (aka Sophie Kinsella) has written and while this one is not my favorite, it is definitely among the most enjoyable. In The Wedding Girl the main character is engaged to be married when a secret from her past throws the wedding and her life through a loop. The book that follows focuses not just on the impact of the main character's secret but also weaves an intricate plot by exploring other secrets held by secondary characters.

In reading this book I had a reaction similar to what I have had with other Wickham/Kinsella books (save for the fabulous Shopaholic series). In the first few pages I was skeptical. The plot seemed far fetched and the events unfolded a little too conveniently in order to set up suspense and drama. It just wasn't believable and led me to roll my eyes a few times. However, once I got about 60 pages in this all melted away. It was still a little far fetched, but Wickham developed the characters very well so that I really cared what happened to them and was willing to overlook the predictability. I also liked that she threw in enough interesting developments that even though I knew where the book would end up it was enjoyable along the way.

In summary this is a good book, not great or awesome, but good. It shares the common downfall of much of chick lit in that the plot lines can be a little predictable and contrived, but the characters were developed well enough that I still found it breezily enjoyable and read it in two days.
